Prayer for peace on our streets

Parishioners at St Paul's Church, Fleetville, St Albans, came together to pray for the nation yesterday (Weds, August 10th) evening. In a specially-organised meeting at the Hatfield Road church, members gathered in response to the unrest that has hit many areas in recent days.

They prayed for the police, for the education system, for teachers seeking to keep discipline in the classroom, and for all affected by the unrest.

The Revd Jeremy Haswell, Curate at St Paul's, said: "There was a lot of sitting before God, feeling the pain of the nation. In many parts of our country, there is an atmosphere of rebellion among our youth and a sense of helplessness and vulnerability among ordinary people. This brought real urgency to our prayers.

“We believe that prayer is an important part that we, as Christians, can offer in the healing of our nation, alongside the role that we are called to play in building a better and more just society for all.”

A Prayer from The Church of England

Gracious God,
We pray for peace in our communities this day.
We commit to you all who work for peace and an end to tensions,
And those who work to uphold law and justice.
We pray for an end to fear,
For comfort and support to those who suffer.
For calm in our streets and cities,
That people may go about their lives in safety and peace.
In your mercy, hear our prayers,
now and always. Amen
